5 wildflowers to plant in the fall for a spectacular spring garden

BBefore you put your gardening tools away for the season, prepare your garden for spring by getting some wildflower seeds in the ground. Planting in the fall not only saves time in the spring, but it also means you get some early wildflower blooms, explains Rebecca Sears, head gardener at Ferry-Morse.

“Fall is actually a great time to plant wildflower seeds because it follows the organic cycle of naturally grown wildflowers,” Sears says. “Wildflowers grow all summer and then drop their seeds in the fall, which are ready to produce new flowers the following spring. If they plant wildflower seeds in the fall, they have the ability to remain dormant all winter and often quick to germinate the first few weeks of spring. Many gardeners also like to plant in the fall, because the gardening to-do list is often shorter than in the spring, so there is more time to focus on preparing of the area and planting fall seeds.”

Sears says you can plant wildflower seeds late in the fall season, but be sure to check the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone map to check your planting zone for more accurate timing.

“If your region gets freezing temperatures in the winter, you can plant flower seeds until December to make sure enough nights have frozen so that the soil temperature is cool enough to support the dormant seeds,” Sears says. “And if your region doesn’t get freezing temperatures in the winter, it’s still best to wait until just before the rainy season, usually between early and mid-fall.”
