The Esker body plane is here to scrape off your dead skin

Ccertain age-old skin care devices make it a case that a good tool used in a solid routine is timeless. Just take the jade roll and gua sha, for example. But while many of these examples focus on the face, it’s also true that your skin with your neck down can use some TLC. Join Esker Body Plane ($ 45), a Greco-Roman-inspired product that makes Ella Dove a video producer and host What Wellness, feel “like a little baby seal”.

“It’s basically a scrape for your body,” Dove says in the latest episode of the YouTube series. “It is used to exfoliate your skin in combination with some body oil to leave you smooth and moisturized with no dead skin cells left on your body.”

The inspiration behind the Esker Body Plane is called a strigil, a seal-like tool used in ancient Greek and Roman cultures for, well, essentially bathing. According to Shannon Davenport, founder of Esker Beauty, the original function of the strigile was that it was the preferred cleanser for gladiators, the celebrities of the day. “They would coat themselves in oil, and then they would use this captain’s hook-like spooky metal tool to scrape their skin and cleanse it,” she says in the video.

The Esker Body Plane, though created with the strigil in mind, is a decidedly less deadly form of the tool. And what makes it uniquely different from other modern body exfoliators is designed not to disturb or damage your moisture barrier. The inclusion of the oil ensures that you are soft, while Esker Body Plane itself removes any residue along with the dead skin. (And yes, you can see the receipts for proof on your towel afterwards.) Think of this as a “pore strip for your body,” as Dove puts it.
