This dreamy scent changed my bedtime routine

mThe bedtime routine is simple: comfy pyjamas, face oil, hand cream, open a really good book… and that’s it. My streamlined regimen has always helped me unwind at 10pm every night, but lately it started to get less than inspiring, resulting in restlessness at bedtime and a not-so-optimal closed eye.

Instead of completely overhauling my routine (and becoming utterly overwhelmed), I started to zhuzhen my pre-sleep activities while keeping the ones I enjoy (like reading). I opened my journal and jotted down a quick list of things that made me feel ultra calm and relaxed. What was at the top of my list, you ask? Fragrance, and it’s no surprise: I’m a candle lover and a perfume lover. Dreamy aromas tend to put me in a soothing state of ease (my favorite fragrance combinations include sweet and woody bases like vanilla and sandalwood).

In a touch of kismet, I was introduced to the new NEST New York Driftwood & Chamomile Wellness Collection—which includes lavish candles and diffusers—as I searched for new nighttime additions. And wow: The velvety scent profile features soothing notes of chamomile, driftwood, sandalwood, and vanilla bean (all of which are known to have a calming, relaxing effect) in a blend I couldn’t get enough of. It was love at first sniff.

So I thought, why not find a way to mix this welcome addition into my evenings to see if it helped me relax? New bedtime routine, coming soon.

1. I (actually) unplugged it after work

It’s important to me to make sure I get a deep sleep every night. Which means that when my workday is over, my sleep routine starts. Let me explain: I don’t go to bed at six, but step at a slower pace with a matching atmosphere. How do you add some atmosphere? The Driftwood & Chamomile 3-Wick Candle gives a sweet calm boost.

After closing my laptop for the night, I lit the candle and made a hot tea. Soon, the candle’s base notes of vanilla bean and sandalwood filled the room, followed by top notes of driftwood and chamomile. The scent was pleasant and calming, which spread into the rest of my night: making dinner with my husband and catching up on some of our favorite shows on the couch with our dog (with *a lot* of ear scratches).

2. I increased my self-care time before bed

Is there anything more glamorous than a warm bath with candles? I will wait. A few nights a week, I traded my nightly shower for a quick soak in the tub, and the Driftwood & Chamomile Classic Candle was the icing on the cake of my new focus on nighttime self-care. The 8 ounce candle is mighty and filled my bathroom with its wonderful scents in just a few minutes.

And on the nights when I didn’t have time to bathe, I still lit the candle on my sink to enjoy the scent while doing my evening skincare routine. I also patted myself on the back for using the candle as a clever way to integrate deep breathing and grounding techniques into my self-care moments (because let’s face it, I wanted to inhale the soothing scent as much as possible anyway). Getting a little extra me-time on the ground improved my mood – and made me feel relaxed.

3. I had sensory support all night long

Smell is arguably one of the most powerful senses, so I like to use the slam dunk effect of this dreamy aroma before going to sleep without ever lighting a match. Here’s how it goes: Top up my nightstand with a NEST New York Reed Diffuser, which lets the scent work its magic all night long without having to worry about an open flame (since I wouldn’t go to sleep with a lit candle, of course ).

The scent was restorative with the same notes swirling through the air without adding heaviness. As the herbal chamomile (which has long been a key ingredient for encouraging sleep) mixed with the sugary vanilla bean and rich sandalwood, I dove into my usual routine of moisturizing and then reading. Once I snuggled under the covers, I almost instantly drifted off to dreamland thanks to the continuous release of the botanical blend. I told you it was serenity on the first sniff.
